The best University sporting talent in the country came to Sheffield to compete in the BUSA British University Championships on 13th March in a four day spectacle.
The event featured the finals of 22 different sports involving the top sporting Universities across Britain, including Sheffield Hallam and Sheffield University. This was the first event of its kind featuring the finals of all the University sports that take place throughout the year, with a total of 6,000 students taking part.
The best 11 sports venues across Sheffield were used over the four days including Don Valley Stadium which hosted the football and the fencing and Ponds Forge which hosted the swimming and the water polo.
The University of Sheffield participated in 4 finals over the four days and were successful in the climbing events with Edward Feehaly coming first in the Men’s individual championship and Lily Fitzgibbon coming first in the Women’s individual Championship which led to Sheffield University winning the mixed team championship.
Sheffield Hallam competed in 6 finals throughout the championships and managed to win the Mens Hockey Shield by beating St.Mary’s 7-3 and in the Athletics events local girl Zara Hohn came 1st in the 60m Womens Final whilst Amy Hill came 1st in the Women’s Shotput Final.
Sheffield has also been signed up to host the 2009 and 2010 British University championships and was chosen from a shortlist to host the event last year due to its top class sporting facilities.
