Restaurant Review Aroma
The stylish chic restaurant opened last year in August 2007, Aroma is a family owned restaurant, the owner Mohammed Jangir formerly in another partnership for a restaurant behind Vijay’s in Charter Square.
The restaurant’s uniqueness and elegant look inside is made with gold-flecked black granite, which is specially imported from India as it gives it a star-studded midnight sky glow.
Aroma’s fine food are made by Pakistan’s finest and talented head chef Aftab Ahmed catered for Princess Diana and created the wedding feast for Imran Khan and Jemima Goldsmith.
"It has a 'wow' factor when you walk in," says manager Vacaas Jangir. "Sheffield was crying out for something like this. We wanted something grand that would make a statement."
The restaurant was booming with customers on Valentines Day, I made reservations for this particular night. Aroma does not sell alcoholic drinks at the bar, however they do allow you to ‘bring your own drinks’.
Some dishes are kept to the traditional Indian theme. One of the starter dishes the ‘King prawns’ are coated in spiced flour and deep fried to juicy perfection. The spicy kick to these prawns leaves your taste buds satisfied. Other starters for the vegetarians are ‘Vegetable Samosa Chaat’ toasted vegetables with a hint of spice, wrapped in a crunchy pastry. Served with hot chick pea curry chutney. If you like the sound of that then Aroma’s ‘Paneer Pakora’ cubes of home –made cheese is a best seller.
Moving onto the main dishes the cod fillet masala fish must say is a great dish for those who love their fish. The tender fish is cooked with fine spices to give it that aromatic taste. Or for those who prefer the chicken the ‘Badami chicken curry’ is Aroma’s house speciality, made with onions and tomatoes, cooked with ground almonds and cream to thicken and enrich the sauce. The chef can add in your choice of how hot and mild you like your curry to be.
Aroma claims to be the first restaurant in Sheffield to produce Punjabi taka-tan dishes. The ‘taka-tan’ is an onomatopoeic sound made by metal spatulas on the iron tawa on which the meat is prepared on. Mostly lamb is cooked on the tawa to give it that unique taste.
Dinner for two, including drinks but excluding service, came to £44 and the bill arrives along with milk sweets. The night I went Ferrero Roches were given and all women were given a complimentary rose to mark Valentines Day.
